Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- لَا ضَيْرَ (Lā Ḍayr): "No harm" — meaning no loss, no damage, or no cause for concern.
- مُنقَلِبُونَ (Munqalibūn): "We shall return" — referring to the return to Allah after death, the final destination.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Pharaoh, in his arrogance and rage, threatened the magicians with severe punishment — cutting off their hands and feet on opposite sides, and crucifying them — their response was not one of fear or hesitation. Instead, they answered with unwavering faith and tranquility: "No harm! Indeed, to our Lord we shall return."
These were men who, moments earlier, had been practicing magic for worldly gain. But when the truth of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) became clear to them, and they witnessed the staff swallow their illusions, their hearts were illuminated. They recognized the Creator and submitted to Him completely. Now, facing Pharaoh's tyranny, they spoke with the certainty of those who have found the ultimate treasure — faith in Allah.
Their words carry a profound message: the harm Pharaoh could inflict upon them was limited to this fleeting world. His punishment, however severe, would end with their death. But what awaited them with their Lord was eternal bliss, forgiveness, and mercy. They understood that the temporary pain of this life is nothing compared to the everlasting reward of the Hereafter.
Notice their beautiful hope: they did not merely say "we shall return," but they expressed trust that their Lord would forgive their past sins — including their former practice of magic and shirk (associating partners with Allah) — because they were now the first among Pharaoh's people to believe. This teaches us that sincere repentance wipes away all that came before it, and that Allah's mercy embraces those who turn to Him, no matter their past.
This verse is a timeless lesson for every believer: when trials come for the sake of truth, do not despair. The threats of tyrants, the hardships of life, and the pains of this world are all temporary. Our true home is with Allah, and He never abandons those who place their trust in Him. Let this steadfastness of the magicians inspire you — they exchanged a moment of worldly fear for an eternity of divine reward. How beautiful is the faith that makes a person fearless in the face of oppression, knowing that Allah is with them and that their final return is to Him alone!
