Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tawallaw (تَوَلَّوْا): They turn away, withdraw, or reject after having been presented with the truth.
- Mufsidīn (الْمُفْسِدِينَ): Those who cause corruption and mischief, spreading disorder and harm in the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows a series of arguments and clear proofs presented to the People of the Book (the Christians of Najran) regarding the truth of Islam and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). After all the evidence has been laid out—the clear signs, the call to mutual understanding, and the invitation to worship Allah alone—the verse addresses their response.
If they turn away after all this clarity, refusing to accept the truth and follow the Messenger, then their turning away is not merely a matter of personal choice—it is an act of corruption. They are the ones who spread mischief on earth by rejecting divine guidance, distorting the truth, and leading others astray. Their rejection is not born of ignorance, for the truth has been made manifest to them; rather, it stems from stubbornness, arrogance, and a desire to maintain their worldly interests at the expense of truth.
The verse then delivers a powerful reassurance: Allah is All-Knowing of the corrupters. Nothing escapes His knowledge—neither their intentions, nor their schemes, nor their actions. He knows exactly who the mufsidīn are, and He will not let their corruption go unpunished. This is both a warning to those who turn away and a comfort to the believers, assuring them that justice will prevail. Allah sees all, and His knowledge encompasses every hidden plot and every open defiance. He will deal with them in His perfect wisdom and justice, whether in this world or in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. Allah has sent His messengers and revealed His books out of mercy for humanity—not to burden us, but to guide us to what is good and to protect us from what harms us. When a person turns away from this guidance after it has reached them, they are not only harming themselves but also contributing to the corruption of society. The rejection of truth breeds injustice, ignorance, and chaos.
Yet, how merciful is Allah! He does not punish immediately; He gives chances, extends time, and keeps the door of repentance open. But let us never be deceived by delay. Allah is fully aware of every heart and every deed. If you have turned away, today is your opportunity to return. If you have been seeking the truth, know that it lies in submission to your Creator. Do not let pride or worldly attachments keep you from the path that leads to eternal success. Allah knows you, He sees your struggle, and He is ready to forgive and guide you the moment you turn to Him with sincerity.
