Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Sa'eer: The blazing, fiercely burning Fire of Hell.
- Yad'uhum: Calls them or invites them.
- Ma Unzila Allah: What Allah has revealed (the Qur'an and the guidance brought by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him).
Explanation of the Verse:
When these people who argue against the Oneness of Allah and His exclusive right to worship are told, "Follow what Allah has revealed to His Messenger," they stubbornly reply, "No, we will instead follow the ways and beliefs we found our forefathers upon." They cling to inherited traditions of polytheism and idol worship, refusing to abandon them even when confronted with the truth.
Allah then poses a powerful rhetorical question to expose the folly of their blind imitation: "What, even if their forefathers—whom they so blindly follow—were being led by Satan himself, who beautifies their evil deeds and calls them to the path that ends in the scorching Fire of Hell on the Day of Judgment?"
In other words, would they still follow their ancestors even if those ancestors were misguided and dragging them toward eternal punishment? The question is a stern rebuke, highlighting that truth is not determined by ancestry or tradition, but by revelation and sound reasoning. Blind following of forefathers, when it contradicts Allah's guidance, is nothing but submission to Satan's deception.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. It invites us to free our minds from the chains of blind custom and inherited error. How often do we find ourselves doing things simply because "that's how we found our parents and grandparents doing them"—without ever questioning whether those practices align with Allah's revelation?
Islam came to liberate humanity from this intellectual stagnation. It calls us to think, to reflect, and to submit only to the Creator, whose guidance is perfect and eternal. The tragedy of those who reject revelation is that they trade the everlasting bliss of Paradise for the fleeting comfort of following a crowd—even if that crowd is marching toward Hellfire.
So ask yourself: Are you following truth because it is true, or are you following tradition because it is familiar? Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent down the Qur'an as a light to illuminate your path. Do not let the whispers of Satan, disguised as "the ways of our ancestors," lead you away from it. Embrace the guidance of Allah, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. The choice is yours—will you follow the call of your Lord to Paradise, or the call of Satan to the blazing Fire?
