Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَجِبْتَ (ʿajibta): You were amazed or astonished — here referring to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ being amazed at the stubbornness of the disbelievers.
- يَسْخَرُونَ (yaskharūn): They mock, ridicule, or scoff — referring to the disbelievers' derision of the Prophet ﷺ and his message.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ directly, expressing a profound truth about the human response to divine guidance. The meaning is: "Rather, you were amazed, O Prophet, and they mock."
The amazement referred to here is twofold. First, it is amazement at the perfect power of Allah and His wise management of all creation — how He creates, sustains, and governs everything with perfect order. Second, and more specifically, it is amazement at the disbelievers' rejection of the Resurrection, despite the overwhelming evidence for it in creation itself. How can they deny that Allah, who created them from nothing, can bring them back to life after death? This denial is utterly astonishing to any rational mind.
Yet, what makes this situation even more remarkable is that instead of reflecting on this truth or being moved by it, the disbelievers respond with mockery and ridicule. They laugh at the Prophet ﷺ and at his wonder at their disbelief. They scoff at the very idea of resurrection and at the one who calls them to believe in it. Their mockery is not a sign of strength or certainty, but rather a defense mechanism against a truth that unsettles them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this verse. The Prophet ﷺ, the most beloved of creation to Allah, was amazed at the disbelievers' rejection — not because the proof was weak, but because it was so clear and undeniable. The heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the creation of every living being — all testify to the power of Allah and His ability to resurrect the dead. Yet some still turn away and mock.
This verse teaches us the beauty of faith — that when the truth becomes clear to a believing heart, it responds with submission and gratitude, not with arrogance and ridicule. It also warns us against the disease of mockery, which closes the heart to guidance and distances a person from the mercy of Allah.
Let us be among those who, when they see the signs of Allah, are filled with wonder and awe, and who respond to His messengers with acceptance and love. Let us not be among those who mock the truth, for their mockery will only bring them regret on the Day when the truth becomes fully manifest to all.
And know, dear reader, that the Prophet ﷺ endured this mockery with patience and steadfastness, and his reward with Allah is immense. If you ever face ridicule for your faith, remember that you are following in the footsteps of the greatest of Allah's creation, and that Allah is with those who are patient and firm upon the truth.
