Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Jinnah (الْجِنَّةِ): Here, it refers to the angels, so named because they are concealed and hidden from human sight (from the root *janna*, meaning to cover or hide).
- Nasab (نَسَبًا): Lineage, kinship, or a familial connection.
- Lamuhḍarūn (لَمُحْضَرُونَ): Those who will be brought forth, presented, or gathered (for reckoning and punishment).
Explanation of the Verse:
The polytheists of Makkah, in their profound ignorance, dared to claim a kinship between Allah—the Almighty, the Creator of all that exists—and the angels. They alleged that the angels were Allah’s daughters, thereby inventing a false lineage that utterly contradicts His majesty and perfection. This claim was not merely a slip of the tongue; it was a deliberate fabrication that degraded the concept of divinity and attributed to Allah what no rational mind could accept—offspring, and specifically daughters, which they themselves despised for themselves.
Yet, the verse delivers a striking and decisive response: the angels themselves—those very beings whom the polytheists falsely claimed as Allah’s daughters—know with absolute certainty that these liars will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment. They will be summoned before their Lord, not as honored relatives, but as guilty criminals facing His justice. The angels, being pure and obedient servants of Allah, are fully aware of the fate awaiting those who utter such slander against their Creator.
This verse exposes the absurdity of shirk (associating partners with Allah) in all its forms. The polytheists sought to elevate themselves by claiming a connection to the divine through the angels, but in reality, they only sealed their own doom. The angels, whom they revered, will stand as witnesses against them, and the very beings they invoked will be present at their punishment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How astonishing is the human heart when it strays from the truth! Instead of bowing in humility before the One who created the heavens and the earth, some people invent falsehoods to bridge the gap between themselves and the divine. Yet, Allah—glorified and exalted—is far above any need for partners, children, or kin. He is Al-Ahad (The One), As-Samad (The Self-Sufficient), who neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none comparable to Him.
Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder of the purity of your faith. Islam calls you to a direct and unmediated relationship with your Lord—a relationship built on love, obedience, and sincere worship, not on fabricated intermediaries or false genealogies. The angels, the prophets, and the righteous are all beloved servants of Allah, but they hold no share in His divinity. When you submit to Allah alone, you align yourself with the truth that the angels themselves uphold, and you secure a place among those who will be brought forth on that Day not for punishment, but for eternal mercy and reward.
So, purify your belief, and let your heart testify: *Lā ilāha illā Allah*—there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah. For in that simple, profound declaration lies your salvation, your honor, and your peace in this life and the next.
