Word Meanings:

  • Dhikr (ذِكرًا): A reminder, a scripture, or a book of divine guidance.
  • Min al-Awwaleen (مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ): Of the earlier peoples or nations — meaning the scriptures revealed to previous communities, such as the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms.

Explanation of the Verse:

Before you were sent, O Messenger, the disbelievers of Makkah used to say: "If only we had a scripture like those given to the earlier nations — a book of guidance from Allah — then we would surely have been sincere servants of Allah, true in our faith and devoted in our worship." They claimed that had they received such a revelation, they would have been better than those who came before them, more obedient and more faithful.

Yet when Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, sent them the greatest of all scriptures — the Qur'an — through His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), they rejected it and disbelieved. Their claim was nothing but an empty excuse, a hollow pretense. They were not truly seeking guidance; they were merely making excuses for their stubbornness. And so, they will soon come to know the severe consequences of their denial on the Day of Judgment, when no excuse will avail them and the truth of their false claims will be laid bare before them.

A Call to Reflection:

How often do we make promises to Allah, saying, "If only I had this or that, I would be better"? Yet when the door of goodness opens before us, we hesitate or turn away. This verse is a profound reminder that Allah has given us the most complete guidance — the Qur'an — which is available to us at all times. There is no excuse left for us. The Book is in our hands, the Prophet's example is before our eyes, and the path to Paradise is clear. Let us not be like those who made excuses and then rejected the truth when it came. Instead, let us seize this divine gift with sincerity, read it, understand it, and live by it. For the Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited — it is a living guide that transforms hearts, elevates souls, and leads us to eternal success. Let us be among those who truly honor the Word of Allah, not with empty claims, but with sincere action and unwavering faith.

📜 Verse 166-170 — As-Saffat

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah."
And indeed, the disbelievers used to say,
"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,
We would have been the chosen servants of Allah."
But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.
