Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wa in kānū": "And indeed they were" – used here for emphasis, indicating a continuous and established habit.
- "La-yaqūlūn": "Certainly saying" – the *lam* of emphasis (lām al-tawkīd) stresses that this was their persistent claim.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse unveils the inner thoughts of the disbelievers of Makkah before the advent of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They used to say — and this was their constant talk among themselves — "If only we had been given a scripture like the ones given to the earlier nations, such as the Torah or the Gospel, then we would have been the most sincere servants of Allah, the most devoted in our worship, and the most righteous in our faith."
They made grand claims and lofty promises. They imagined that if divine revelation had come to them, they would have embraced it wholeheartedly, unlike the Jews and Christians who had received scriptures before them. They believed they would have excelled in obedience and sincerity.
Yet, when the truth finally arrived — when the Qur'an was revealed to the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him) — they turned away in rejection and disbelief. Their beautiful words proved to be empty and false. They were not seekers of truth; they were merely making excuses. And so, the subsequent verses warn them that they will soon come to know the bitter consequences of their denial on the Day of Judgment.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. How often do we make promises to Allah that we will change, that we will become devoted, that we will pray and obey — *if only* circumstances were different? We wait for the "perfect moment" to become righteous, yet when opportunities present themselves, we hesitate or turn away.
The disbelievers of Makkah are a timeless example of how self-deception can blind a heart. They claimed they would be the best of believers, yet when the Qur'an came to them — the very thing they said they wanted — they rejected it. Let this be a mirror for us: do not delay your return to Allah, do not postpone your repentance, and do not make excuses. The door of guidance is open now, and the Qur'an is in your hands. Embrace it with sincerity, and you will find that Allah's promise is true — He guides those who truly seek Him.
Indeed, Allah does not need our worship; we need His mercy. And He has already sent us His final revelation, not as a burden, but as a mercy to all of humanity. Will we be like those who merely spoke beautiful words, or will we be among those who act upon what they say? The choice is ours, and the time is now.
