Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nuzulan (نُزُلًا): The hospitality or provision prepared for a guest who arrives or settles — in this context, it refers to the honour and welcome prepared by Allah for His righteous servants in Paradise.
  • Shajarat al-Zaqqum (شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ): A specific tree mentioned in the Qur’an that grows in the depths of Hellfire; its fruit is bitter, foul, and burns like molten brass — the food of the inhabitants of Hell.

Explanation of the Verse:

After describing the delights of Paradise — gardens of bliss, couches adorned, cups of pure drink, and the company of beautiful companions — Allah poses a rhetorical question to awaken the human conscience: “Is that [bounty] better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?”

The comparison is striking and deliberate. On one side stands the eternal hospitality of Paradise: a generous reception prepared by the Most Merciful for His devoted servants — a place where no harm touches them, where they recline in security and joy, and where every desire is fulfilled. On the other side stands the tree of Zaqqum — a cursed tree that grows from the depths of Hellfire, whose fruits are like the heads of devils, and which the sinners will be forced to eat, only to have it churn in their bellies like boiling oil, giving them neither nourishment nor relief from hunger.

The question is not a genuine inquiry but a decisive, self-evident truth: no sane person would choose the tree of Zaqqum over the gardens of delight. Yet, the verse serves as a profound wake-up call — it urges every soul to reflect: which path am I walking toward? The path that leads to this honourable welcome, or the path that ends at that bitter tree?

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause for a moment. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has laid both paths before you clearly. He does not force you — He invites you. He describes Paradise with such beauty that hearts yearn for it, and He describes Hell with such severity that souls tremble. This verse is a loving call from your Creator: “Choose wisely! The hospitality of your Lord is far better than any fleeting pleasure that leads to the Zaqqum tree.”

Every good deed you do — every prayer, every act of kindness, every word of truth — is a step toward that blessed welcome. And every sin you persist in, every moment you neglect His remembrance, is a step toward that bitter tree. The choice is yours, and the time is now. Do not let the illusions of this world deceive you, for its pleasures are temporary, but the hospitality of Paradise is eternal. Turn to Allah today, and He will turn to you with mercy, forgiveness, and a welcome beyond your imagination.
