Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes a beautiful and profound social ethic in Islam: the etiquette of responding to greetings. When someone extends a greeting to you—whether it is the Islamic greeting of peace ("As-salāmu ʿalaykum") or any other courteous salutation—you are commanded to respond with something *better* than what you received, or at the very least, to return the exact same greeting.

The command is twofold, giving the believer a choice with a clear preference:

  1. Respond with something better: This means exceeding the initial greeting in warmth, wording, or sincerity. For example, if someone says, "Peace be upon you," you respond with, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." This adds more words of blessing and reflects a generous, loving spirit. It elevates the interaction to a higher level of kindness and brotherhood.
  2. Or return the same greeting: If you cannot or choose not to exceed it, then at minimum, you must reciprocate with the exact same words. This ensures that kindness is never met with silence or rudeness, and that mutual respect is maintained.

This teaching is not merely about words—it is about the heart. The response should be accompanied by a cheerful face and a genuine spirit of goodwill. The verse reminds us that Allah is the Ḥasīb (the All-Reckoner) —He takes precise account of every single deed, including the smallest exchange of greetings. Nothing is lost with Him. Every kind word you utter, every warm smile you offer in response to a fellow human being, is recorded and will be rewarded by Allah, the Most Generous.

This divine instruction transforms a simple social habit into an act of worship. When you greet others and respond to their greetings with excellence, you are not just being polite—you are obeying your Lord, spreading love among people, and planting seeds of harmony in your community. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged spreading salām precisely because it generates mutual affection and strengthens the bonds of faith.

So, dear believer, let this verse be a daily practice. When someone greets you, seize the opportunity to earn Allah's reward by responding with an even better greeting. Let your words be a source of warmth and your face a reflection of Islamic character. In doing so, you draw closer to Allah, who is ever watchful and ever ready to reward even the smallest act of kindness. This is the beauty of Islam—it elevates every aspect of life, even a simple "hello," into a means of divine pleasure and eternal reward.

📜 Verse 84-88 — An-Nisa

So fight, [O Muhammad], in the cause of Allah; you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers [to join you] that perhaps Allah will restrain the [military] might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is greater in might and stronger in [exemplary] punishment.
Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a reward therefrom; and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a burden therefrom. And ever is Allah, over all things, a Keeper.
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.
Allah - there is no deity except Him. He will surely assemble you for [account on] the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful than Allah in statement.
What is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned. Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has sent astray? And he whom Allah sends astray - never will you find for him a way [of guidance].
