Word Meanings:

  • "Tu'minū" — to believe, to have faith, to accept as true.
  • "Fa'tazilūn" — withdraw from me, leave me alone, keep away from me.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is the concluding statement of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) to Pharaoh and his people, completing his message of truth. After calling them to believe in Allah alone, to worship Him sincerely, and to treat the Children of Israel with kindness, Moses makes his final position clear: if they refuse to believe in what he has brought, then they should at least leave him alone and not harm him.

The Prophet Moses is essentially saying: "If you will not accept my call to faith, then do not oppress me, do not attack me, and do not stand in my way. Let me go in peace, and I will let you be." This is not a retreat from his mission, but rather a dignified declaration that he will not force anyone into belief, nor will he tolerate aggression against him while he continues to convey Allah's message.

This verse carries a profound lesson in the etiquette of da'wah (calling to Allah). Moses did not threaten Pharaoh with worldly punishment, nor did he engage in arguments that would lead to hostility. Instead, he drew a clear line: belief is a matter of the heart, and if they choose disbelief, then let there be no persecution. This reflects the noble character of the prophets — they deliver the message with clarity, then leave the matter of guidance to Allah.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, notice the beauty of this approach. The prophet does not say "if you do not believe, I will curse you" or "I will fight you." Rather, he says: "then leave me alone." This is the patience and forbearance of the messengers. They never forced anyone into faith, because true faith comes from the heart, willingly and sincerely.

For us today, this verse teaches us to be gentle in our dealings with those who oppose the truth. We deliver the message with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and if people choose otherwise, we do not resort to aggression or compulsion. We simply continue on our path, trusting in Allah's justice and wisdom.

And what a beautiful ending this statement has! For when Moses said these words, Allah responded by protecting him from Pharaoh's harm, and ultimately granted him victory over the tyrant. This is the promise of Allah to those who sincerely convey His message: He will never abandon them, and He will always be their Protector and Helper.

So let us learn from this noble example — to be firm in our principles, gentle in our approach, and always reliant on Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority.
20وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ
And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.

But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
