Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿudhtu (عُذْتُ): I sought refuge and protection, turning to someone for safety and security.
- an tarjumūn (أَن تَرْجُمُونِ): that you stone me to death — i.e., kill me by throwing stones.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) delivered the message of truth to Pharaoh and his people, and presented them with clear proofs of his prophethood, they responded with arrogance and threats of violence. They threatened to kill him. In the face of this intimidation, Musa did not rely on his own strength or on any human ally. Instead, he turned to his Lord and declared: "Indeed, I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord from your stoning me to death."
This statement carries profound meanings. First, Musa is affirming the Oneness of Allah — that the Lord he worships is also the Lord of Pharaoh and his people, the Creator and Sustainer of all. By saying "my Lord and your Lord," he reminds them that the One protecting him is the very One who created them and holds their lives in His hands. No threat, no stone, and no army can overcome the protection of Allah.
Second, this verse teaches us the ultimate source of safety and security. When believers face danger, oppression, or the hostility of others, their refuge is Allah alone. Musa did not flee in panic, nor did he compromise his message out of fear. He stood firm, placing his complete trust in Allah's protection. This is the essence of true reliance on Allah (tawakkul) — combined with steadfastness in conveying the truth.
Third, the verse demonstrates the noble character of the prophets. Musa did not curse his enemies or seek revenge; he simply sought Allah's protection from their harm. This is a lesson in patience, dignity, and turning to Allah in times of hardship.
For us as believers, this verse is a powerful reminder that no matter how powerful or threatening the oppressors may seem, Allah is the ultimate Protector of His righteous servants. When we face trials, we should turn to Allah with sincere supplication, just as Musa did, and remain steadfast upon the truth. Allah never abandons those who seek His refuge with sincere hearts.
Moreover, this verse instills hope and courage in the hearts of the believers. It reassures us that the plots of the enemies of truth will never prevail against the protection of Allah. The One who saved Musa from Pharaoh's tyranny is the same Lord who is capable of saving us from every hardship and shielding us from every harm. So hold firm to your faith, seek Allah's refuge, and trust in His promise — for His protection is the strongest shield of all.
