Word Meanings:

  • Jannāt (جَنَّاتٍ): Lush gardens and orchards with dense trees and abundant shade.
  • ʿUyūn (عُيُونٍ): Springs of flowing, gushing water.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah the Almighty destroyed Pharaoh and his army by drowning them in the sea, He draws our attention to the fleeting nature of worldly possessions. The verse asks: How many gardens with flourishing trees and flowing springs did they leave behind? These were not mere ordinary gardens—they were symbols of luxury, comfort, and pride. Pharaoh and his people had built a civilization of unmatched splendor in Egypt, with verdant orchards, running water, and every delight the heart could desire. Yet, when the command of Allah came, none of these treasures could protect them or prolong their lives by even a single moment. They departed from this world, leaving all of it behind, while their wealth and pleasures became a lesson for those who reflect.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that worldly abundance is temporary and deceptive. No matter how much one accumulates—be it wealth, status, gardens, or flowing springs—it will all be left behind at the moment of death. The true investment is in what remains: faith, good deeds, and the pleasure of Allah. The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to look at the fate of past nations, not to frighten us, but to awaken our hearts and guide us toward what truly matters.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to pause and reflect: What are you building your life upon? Is it on the fleeting gardens of this world, or on the eternal gardens of the Hereafter, which Allah has prepared for His righteous servants? The choice is yours, and the time to decide is now, before the waters of death overtake you as they did Pharaoh and his people. May Allah grant us the wisdom to prioritize what is everlasting over what is temporary.

📜 Verse 23-27 — Ad-Dukhan

[Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."
How much they left behind of gardens and springs
And crops and noble sites
And comfort wherein they were amused.
