Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Mulk (مُلْكُ): Absolute sovereignty, ownership, and dominion.
  • Al-Samawati (السَّمَاوَاتِ): The heavens — all that exists above the earth, including celestial realms.
  • Al-Ard (الأَرْضِ): The earth — the entire terrestrial realm.
  • Ma fihinna (مَا فِيهِنَّ): Everything contained within the heavens and the earth — all creatures, beings, and phenomena.
  • Qadir (قَدِيرٌ): All-Powerful, capable of doing everything without any limitation or hindrance.

The Interpretation:

This verse stands as a majestic conclusion to Surah Al-Maidah, sealing the entire chapter with a profound declaration of Allah’s absolute sovereignty. It proclaims that to Allah alone — with no partner, no associate, and no rival — belongs the dominion of the heavens, the earth, and everything within them. He is their Creator, their Sustainer, and the One who manages all their affairs with perfect wisdom and justice.

This statement carries a powerful corrective message. Throughout this chapter, the Qur'an has addressed the beliefs of the People of the Book, particularly the Christians who elevated Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) to divinity. This verse decisively refutes such claims by establishing that all dominion belongs exclusively to Allah — not to Jesus, not to any prophet, not to any angel, and not to any created being whatsoever. Jesus himself was a servant of Allah, a messenger who lived, ate, prayed, and ultimately was raised by Allah’s command. How could one who is a creation within the heavens and the earth claim ownership over them?

The verse then culminates with the attribute of absolute power: "And He is over all things competent." Nothing escapes His knowledge, nothing resists His will, and nothing is too difficult for Him. He is capable of resurrecting the dead, bringing forth the Day of Judgment, rewarding the righteous with Paradise, and punishing the wicked with Hellfire. No force in existence can impede His decree, and no obstacle can stand before His command.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the grandeur of this statement. The heavens with their countless galaxies, stars, and celestial wonders — all belong to Him. The earth with its mountains, oceans, and all living creatures — all are under His dominion. And you, in your very being, are part of this vast kingdom. When you recognize that your Creator is the Owner of everything and that He is capable of all things, your heart finds peace, your trust finds its anchor, and your worship finds its true direction.

This verse invites you to liberate yourself from the chains of fear — fear of creation, fear of circumstances, fear of the unknown — because the One who owns everything is your Lord. If He is with you, who can stand against you? And if He is capable of all things, then no matter how impossible your situation may seem, His power encompasses it.

Let this truth transform your life: submit to the One who truly owns you, place your hopes in the One who is truly capable, and direct your worship to the One who alone deserves it. For when you align yourself with the Sovereign of the heavens and the earth, you align yourself with the ultimate reality — and nothing in this world or the next can harm you except what He has decreed, and nothing can benefit you except what He has granted. This is the essence of faith, the foundation of peace, and the path to eternal success.

📜 Verse 118-120 — Al-Maidah

If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment.
120لِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا فِيهِنَّ ۚ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And He is over all things competent.
