Word Meanings:
- Jabbāreen (جَبَّارِينَ): Overbearing, tyrannical people of immense strength and might who overpower others and force them to submit to their will.
- Lan nadkhulahā (لَن نَّدْخُلَهَا): We will never enter it — an emphatic negation indicating absolute refusal.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) commanded his people to enter the sacred land of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) as Allah had ordained, they responded with fear and cowardice. They said: "O Musa, indeed within it there are a people of immense strength and overwhelming power — tyrants who dominate and subjugate others. We have no ability to fight them, and we will never enter the land while they remain in it. But if they depart from it, then we will enter."
This statement reveals a profound weakness in their faith. They had witnessed the miracles of Allah — the parting of the sea, the destruction of Pharaoh and his army — yet they still doubted Allah's promise of victory. They looked at their own limited strength instead of relying on Allah's unlimited power. They made their obedience conditional upon the enemy's departure, rather than trusting that Allah would grant them victory as He had promised.
Their words also exposed a deeper spiritual malady: they preferred the humiliation of wandering in the desert over the honor of striving in Allah's cause. They chose safety over sacrifice, and in doing so, they lost the blessing of the sacred land for an entire generation.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear believer, this story is not merely history — it is a mirror for our own hearts. How often do we see obstacles as insurmountable walls, forgetting that Allah is the One who says to a thing "Be" and it is? The giants of difficulty, fear, and doubt may seem overwhelming, but they are nothing before the might of Allah.
The lesson here is profound: victory comes not from the absence of challenges, but from the presence of trust in Allah. When you face your own "Jabbāreen" — whether they are personal struggles, societal pressures, or trials in your faith — remember that Allah has already promised: "Indeed, Allah is with the patient" (2:153). Do not make your obedience conditional on easy circumstances. Rather, step forward with sincere reliance on Allah, and you will find that He opens doors you never imagined.
The people of Musa failed because they measured the enemy's strength without measuring Allah's power. Do not make their mistake. Place your trust in the Almighty, and He will never abandon you. For indeed, with hardship comes ease, and Allah's help is always near for those who believe and act.
