Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- نُّطْفَةٍ (Nutfah): A drop of fluid — specifically referring to the semen emitted during intercourse, which contains the elements of human creation.
- إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ (idhā tumnā): When it is poured forth or emitted — i.e., when it is discharged and deposited into the womb.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of Allah’s creative power, following the mention of His creating the pairs — male and female — from a single origin. Here, Allah specifies that this origin is a humble drop of fluid, emitted at the moment of ejaculation and received into the womb. The wording emphasizes the timing and the process: it is not a static substance but a dynamic event — a fluid that is poured forth at a precise moment, by divine decree, to become the starting point of a new human being.
This description serves multiple purposes. First, it reminds humanity of their humble beginnings — that every person, regardless of their status, wealth, or power, was once a mere drop of fluid, unremarkable and unseen. Second, it highlights the immense power and wisdom of Allah, who transforms this insignificant drop into a fully formed human being with a soul, intellect, and purpose. The verse subtly points to the miracle of reproduction — a process so intricate that no human can fully replicate or comprehend it, yet it happens countless times every day by the will of Allah.
The use of the word "tumnā" (poured forth) conveys a sense of ease and precision — the fluid is released, and from it, Allah brings forth life. This is a call to reflect: if Allah can create such a magnificent being from such a lowly substance, then surely His power over all things — including resurrection after death — is beyond doubt. The verse invites the reader to look at themselves and recognize the hand of their Creator, and to respond with gratitude and submission.
Reflection and Call to Faith:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: you were once nothing but a drop of fluid, unnoticed by the world. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, shaped you, gave you form, and breathed into you a soul. He did not create you in vain, nor did He leave you without purpose. This verse is a gentle yet profound reminder that your existence is not a random accident — it is a deliberate act of divine will. So turn to your Creator with humility, thank Him for the gift of life, and seek to fulfill the purpose for which you were created: to know Him, worship Him, and live in obedience to His guidance. For the One who created you from a drop of fluid is fully capable of bringing you back to life after death, to reward you for your faith and good deeds. Let this reflection draw you closer to Him, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Loving.
