Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- النشأة الأولى (al-nash'ah al-ūlā): The first creation or the initial bringing into existence — referring to how Allah created human beings from nothing, beginning with the sperm drop and passing through stages in the womb.
- فَلَوْلَا (falawlā): "Why not" or "If only" — a phrase used to encourage and urge, here meaning "So why do you not..."
- تَذَكَّرُونَ (tadhakkarūn): To remember, reflect, and draw lessons — to let the mind ponder over evidence and arrive at the truth.
The Interpretation:
You already know with certainty that you were created once before — you were nothing, then Allah brought you into existence. You witnessed your own beginning: from a drop of fluid, then a clinging clot, then a lump of flesh, until you emerged as a living human being. This is not a hidden or doubtful matter; it is a reality you have all experienced and observed in yourselves and in others around you.
So why, then, do you not reflect and draw the obvious conclusion? The One who created you the first time — when you were nothing at all — is surely able to create you again. The resurrection after death is no more difficult for Him than the first creation. In fact, recreating something that already existed is easier than creating it from nothing. If you truly understand your own origin, the path to belief in the Hereafter becomes clear and undeniable.
This is an invitation to use your intellect — the very faculty Allah gave you — to look at yourselves and realize that the power which brought you into being is not limited or weakened. The same hands that shaped you in the womb can reshape you on the Day of Judgment. Your own existence is living proof of Allah's ability, and your reflection on it is the key to faith.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: you did not create yourself, nor did your parents create you from nothing. You were once a secret hidden in the darkness of the womb, and Allah brought you forth with perfect form, hearing, sight, and intellect. Is it reasonable to believe that the One who performed this miracle of creation cannot bring you back to life after death? Certainly not! The Qur'an is calling you to look at yourself as a sign — a sign that points directly to your Creator and to the Day when you will stand before Him. Let this reflection soften your heart, strengthen your faith, and inspire you to live a life that pleases the One who gave you existence. For the One who created you once is the One who will bring you back — and that meeting is nearer than you think.
