Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Taḥruthūn (تَحْرُثُونَ): You till or plough the earth, and sow seeds into it for cultivation.
The Explanation of the Verse:
Have you ever paused to reflect, O people, on the very act of farming that you engage in? You till the soil, you break its crust, you cast the seeds into it with your own hands, and you wait with hope for a harvest. But consider this deeply: Are you the ones who cause that seed to sprout and grow into a thriving plant? Are you the ones who split the grain open and draw forth from it the green shoot, the ear of wheat, or the fruit-laden branch? No, indeed! It is Allah alone who settles the seed firmly in the earth, who commands it to grow, and who brings forth from the darkness of the soil the living, nourishing plant. Your role is merely to prepare the ground and cast the seed; the miracle of life, growth, and sustenance is entirely in the Hands of the Almighty.
And if He willed, He could make that very same crop, for which you labored so hard, turn into dry, brittle chaff—useless, crumbled, and of no benefit to you whatsoever. You would then stand in utter amazement and regret, saying, "We are indeed ruined and punished! We have lost all our effort and provision." But Allah, in His mercy, usually preserves your harvest and grants you sustenance from it, so that you may be grateful and recognize His boundless favor upon you.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a gentle yet profound invitation to open your eyes to the everyday miracles that surround you. The farmer who ploughs his field is not the true provider; the rain that falls, the sun that shines, and the earth that yields are all subservient to the command of Allah. When you eat your bread, remember that it is not merely the result of your toil, but a gift from the Most Merciful. Let this realization fill your heart with gratitude and humility. If you can see the Hand of Allah in the sprouting of a seed, how can you not see His wisdom and power in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the revelation of the Qur'an? Turn to Him with a sincere heart, for He is the One who nourishes your bodies and your souls. Embrace Islam with full conviction, for it is the path that connects you to the Creator who sustains you every moment of your life.
