Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ" — No partner or associate for Him in His divinity, lordship, names, or attributes.
- "وَبِذَٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ" — And with that (i.e., pure monotheism and sincere devotion) I have been commanded.
- "وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ" — And I am the first of those who submit (to Allah) from this nation (Ummah).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare the essence of his faith and the core of his message: that Allah alone has no partner whatsoever — none in His divinity, none in His lordship, and none in His names and attributes. He is unique in His essence, His actions, and His perfect qualities. No one shares with Him in worship, and no one deserves devotion except Him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was commanded to uphold this pure monotheism — to worship Allah alone, with sincerity, free from any trace of shirk (associating partners with Allah). This command was not merely a recommendation but a divine obligation upon him and his followers.
Then comes the profound statement: "And I am the first of the Muslims" — meaning the first to submit and surrender to Allah from this Ummah (nation). Just as every prophet preceded his people in submission to Allah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the foremost among his followers in embracing Islam, surrendering his will entirely to his Lord, and leading by example in obedience and devotion.
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: our Prophet (peace be upon him) was the pioneer of submission to Allah, and we are called to follow in his footsteps — making sincere, exclusive devotion to Allah the foundation of our lives, just as he did. The one who truly loves the Prophet (peace be upon him) follows his example in pure monotheism and complete surrender to the Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent declaration. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not say "I am the best of the Muslims" or "I am the greatest" — rather, he said "I am the first of the Muslims," teaching us that what matters is not boasting about rank, but being foremost in sincerity and submission to Allah. This is an open invitation to every soul: come and be among those who submit to Allah alone, with a heart free from false gods, worldly distractions, and hidden shirk. The door of Islam is open, and the first to enter it was the best of creation — so what awaits those who follow him with true faith? Paradise, eternal bliss, and the pleasure of the Almighty. Let this verse be a turning point in your life — a moment where you renew your covenant with Allah to worship Him alone, to love Him alone, and to submit to Him alone. For indeed, the purest happiness lies in that very submission.
