Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fitnatuhum (فِتْنَتُهُمْ): Their trial, test, or the answer they give when put to the test. In this context, it refers to their excuse or response when questioned about their false deities.
- Ma kunna mushrikeen (مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ): "We were not polytheists" — i.e., we never associated partners with Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Resurrection, when the disbelievers are questioned about the partners they used to worship alongside Allah, their trial will reach its peak. They will be tested, and in that moment of utter exposure and helplessness, their only response will be to deny their past entirely. They will swear by Allah, their Lord, saying: "By Allah, our Lord, we were never polytheists — we never associated partners with You."
This is a lie born of desperation. They will try to distance themselves from their false gods and from their own deeds, hoping to escape accountability. But their denial will not save them. Allah will seal their mouths, and their own limbs — their hands, feet, and skin — will bear witness against them, testifying to the very acts they now deny. Their own bodies will speak the truth that their tongues refuse to admit.
The Qur'an calls this response a *fitnah* — a trial and a tribulation — because their false oath is itself a cause of ruin. The lie they utter is not merely a failed excuse; it is a trap that plunges them deeper into destruction. For when a person persists in falsehood, even in the presence of Allah, their own words become a witness against them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. These people spent their entire lives worshipping idols, following their desires, and rejecting the truth. Yet, when faced with their Lord, they had the audacity to swear falsely that they were innocent. How powerful is self-deception! How deeply can a person convince themselves of a lie!
This verse is a profound reminder for every soul: do not let your heart become accustomed to falsehood, even in small matters. For if you practice denying the truth in this world, you may find yourself denying it in the Hereafter — and there, no repentance will be accepted. The Qur'an teaches us to be people of honesty and integrity, to purify our hearts from shirk in all its forms — whether it be the shirk of worshipping other deities, or the hidden shirk of showing off, arrogance, or relying on other than Allah.
Let this verse draw you closer to the beauty of Tawheed — the pure, unshakeable belief that Allah alone is your Lord, your Creator, and your Sustainer. Embrace that truth now, in this life, with sincerity and love, so that when you stand before Him, your tongue will speak the truth, your limbs will bear witness to your righteousness, and your meeting with your Lord will be one of mercy and peace. Do not wait until the day when denial becomes your only resort — for on that day, it will avail you nothing.
