Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Karb (كَرْب): Severe distress, overwhelming grief, or any intense hardship that constricts the heart and causes anguish.
- Tunjīkum (يُنَجِّيكُم): He saves and delivers you completely from danger and harm.
- Tushrikūn (تُشْرِكُونَ): You associate partners with Allah in worship, despite His sole power to rescue you.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to those who call upon others besides Allah in times of fear and desperation: "Allah alone is the One who saves you from this calamity—whether it be the terror of the sea, the darkness of the night, or any other overwhelming trial—and He alone delivers you from every kind of distress and hardship, no matter how severe or hopeless it may seem." Yet, astonishingly, after He has granted you safety and relief, you still turn away and associate partners with Him in worship—offering your devotion to idols, stones, or beings that possess no power to harm or benefit you in the least. What greater injustice could there be than to thank the One who saved you by worshipping others alongside Him? This is the height of ingratitude and the deepest form of spiritual blindness.
Reflection and Da‘wah:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own life. When a storm rages—whether a literal tempest at sea or the storms of illness, financial ruin, or heartbreak—to whom does your heart instinctively turn? In those moments of utter helplessness, you find yourself crying out to the One who hears all, the One whose hand holds the keys to every relief. That innate call is the purest form of faith, the fitrah that Allah placed within you. So why, once the clouds part and calm returns, do we forget that very Hand that pulled us from the depths? Allah does not ask much of us—only that we acknowledge Him as the sole Provider and Protector, and that we direct our worship to Him alone. This is not a burden; it is the key to true peace. When you make Allah your only refuge in both ease and hardship, you will find a tranquility that no amount of wealth or worldly success can ever provide. Let this verse be a gentle reminder: the One who saves you from every karb is the One who deserves your gratitude, your love, and your undivided worship. Answer His call, and He will never abandon you.
