Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Munthareen (الْمُنظَرِينَ): Those who are granted a delay or respite — meaning their punishment or death is postponed until a specified time.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty responds to Iblis (Satan) after his arrogant refusal to prostrate to Adam (peace be upon him) and his subsequent request for respite until the Day of Resurrection. Allah says: "He said: Indeed, you are among those given respite."
This means that Allah granted Iblis his request, but not indefinitely — rather, only until the first blowing of the Trumpet (Sur), which marks the end of this worldly life and the death of all creation. This is a precise and limited extension, not an eternal one. Every soul that has been written to live until that moment will taste death, and Iblis is no exception.
The wisdom behind this respite is profound and multifaceted. Allah granted this delay as a test for humanity — to distinguish those who obey Him out of sincere faith from those who follow the whispers of Satan. It is a means by which the righteous elevate their ranks through patience and steadfastness, and by which the disobedient bear the weight of their choices. The greater the trial, the greater the reward for those who remain firm, and the greater the accountability for those who stray.
This verse carries a powerful reminder for every believer: the respite given to Satan is not a sign of his power or importance, but rather a manifestation of Allah's perfect wisdom and justice. Allah is never hasty in His decree, and His timing is always precise. Just as He granted respite to Iblis, He grants respite to sinners — not because He is unaware or negligent, but because He is patient and gives every soul the opportunity to repent and return to Him.
Dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart to the reality that this worldly life is temporary and fleeting. The respite granted to Satan will come to an end, and so will the opportunity for repentance. Do not let the whispers of the enemy deceive you into procrastination. Seize every moment to draw closer to your Lord, for the Trumpet will be blown when you least expect it, and on that Day, no respite will be granted to anyone. The door of repentance is open now — do not wait until it is closed forever.
