The Explanation:
This verse paints a breathtaking picture of the celestial realm and the majesty of Allah, the Most High. It tells us that the angels — including the noblest of them all, Jibreel (peace be upon him) — ascend to Allah, rising through the heavens in a day whose measure is fifty thousand years of earthly time. This is not a literal journey of distance, but rather a profound illustration of the greatness of that Day and the immense power of Allah, to Whom all affairs ascend and return.
Imagine the scale: a day that stretches to fifty thousand years, yet the angels traverse it with ease and swiftness, for they are created for obedience and are strengthened by their Lord. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the reality of the Hereafter — a Day that will indeed come, no matter how distant it may seem to us in this fleeting world. The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance, mocked the idea of punishment and the Day of Judgment, even calling for it to hasten. But Allah reassures us that this Day is certain, and nothing can prevent it from arriving.
For the believer, however, this immense Day is made easy. The scholars have noted that for the righteous, that Day will feel like the time it takes to pray an obligatory prayer — a moment of ease and tranquility, because of their faith and good deeds. This is the mercy of Allah: the same Day that terrifies the wrongdoers becomes a source of peace for those who trusted in Him and lived accordingly.
So let this verse fill your heart with awe for the greatness of Allah, and with hope in His mercy. The angels ascend to Him constantly, carrying the deeds of His servants. Let your deeds be ones that the angels are honored to carry — deeds of sincerity, kindness, and devotion. And know that the Day of Recompense is nearer than you think, and for the believer, it holds nothing but good.
