Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yufjira (يَفْجُرَ): To persist in sin, wickedness, and disobedience; to break away from the bounds of righteousness.
- Amāmahu (أَمَامَهُ): What lies ahead of him — i.e., the future days of his life, and ultimately the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the true motive behind a person’s denial of the Day of Resurrection. It is not that the evidence for the Hereafter is unclear or that the proofs are insufficient — rather, the problem lies in the corrupt desire of the human being. He does not deny the resurrection out of genuine doubt or intellectual confusion; he denies it because he wants to continue living in sin and transgression without any restraint or accountability. He wishes to enjoy his fleeting desires in this world, indulging in disobedience, without the thought of a reckoning hanging over him.
The verse says: "But man desires to persist in wickedness ahead of him." This means that the disbeliever, when he asks, "When will the Day of Resurrection be?" — as mentioned in the following verse — is not asking out of sincere curiosity. Rather, he is mocking and denying, because accepting the truth of the Hereafter would place a barrier between him and his lusts. He wants to live freely, plunging into sin, with no fear of a day when he will stand before his Lord and be held accountable for every deed, big or small.
This is a profound psychological insight from the Qur'an: the root of much disbelief and rejection of truth is not intellectual, but moral. The heart that loves sin will find reasons to reject the truth that condemns it. The Qur'an, therefore, calls upon every person to examine their intentions — is their rejection of truth based on honest inquiry, or is it because the truth conflicts with their desires?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to look into your own heart. When you hear about the Day of Judgment, do you feel a sense of accountability that drives you toward goodness? Or does the thought of it disturb you because you wish to continue in heedlessness? The Qur'an tells us that the One who created us from a drop of fluid, who formed us and gave us sight and hearing, is certainly able to bring us back to life. He does not ask us to abandon the pleasures of this world entirely — rather, He asks us to enjoy them within the boundaries He set, which are for our own benefit and peace. The path of faith is not a path of deprivation; it is a path of true freedom — freedom from the slavery of desires, freedom from the anxiety of meaninglessness, and freedom from the fear of death. Embrace the truth, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
