Key Words and Meanings:
- "Those in whose hearts is a disease" (الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ): Refers to the hypocrites whose hearts are afflicted with doubt, disbelief, and spiritual sickness.
- "Increased them in filth upon their filth" (فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ): Added disbelief, hypocrisy, and impurity to what they already harbored.
- "They died while they were disbelievers" (وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ): They passed away persisting in their rejection of Allah and His signs.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse draws a sharp contrast between two groups of people when a new chapter (Surah) of the Qur'an is revealed. For the believers, every revelation strengthens their faith, increases their certainty, and brings them closer to their Lord. But for the hypocrites—those whose hearts are diseased with doubt, envy, and malice—the very same revelation has the opposite effect. Instead of guiding them, it pushes them further into their darkness. Every new verse, every new command, and every new story becomes another occasion for them to mock, deny, and harden their hearts. Thus, their spiritual impurity multiplies: disbelief is piled upon disbelief, hypocrisy upon hypocrisy, and stubbornness upon stubbornness. Their disease becomes chronic, and their hearts become sealed, until they ultimately meet their Lord in a state of utter rejection—dying as disbelievers, having never benefited from the mercy that was sent down to them.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder of the condition of the heart—the seat of all guidance or misguidance. The Qur'an is not merely words on a page; it is a living light that either revives hearts or exposes their sickness, depending on their state. When a heart is pure and sincere, the Qur'an becomes its healing, its guide, and its greatest joy. But when a heart is corrupted by pride, envy, or hypocrisy, the same verses become a source of increased darkness. Dear reader, ask yourself: What is the state of your heart when you hear the words of Allah? Do you feel tranquility, awe, and a desire to change? Or do you feel discomfort, indifference, or even annoyance? The Qur'an is a mercy and a cure for those who open their hearts to it, but a loss for those who turn away. Do not let your heart become diseased with arrogance or stubbornness. Purify it with sincerity, humility, and a genuine love for the truth, so that every verse you hear brings you closer to Allah—not further away. For the hypocrites died in their disbelief, but the believers were promised gardens beneath which rivers flow, forever abiding in the pleasure of their Lord. Choose today which path you will walk, for the heart is the key to your eternal destiny.
