Explanation of the Verse:
When Our messengers—the angels sent by Allah—came to Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) in the form of handsome young men with beautiful faces, Lot was deeply troubled and grieved by their arrival. His heart tightened, and he felt a profound sense of helplessness and anxiety. This was because he did not know they were angels of Allah; rather, he saw them as noble guests under his protection, and he feared greatly for their safety.
Why was he so distressed? Because his people were notorious for their wicked and unnatural practice—approaching men with lustful desire instead of women. Lot knew that if his people saw these handsome guests, they would rush to harm them and commit their abominable act. He felt trapped, unable to protect his guests from the evil of his own community, and he lamented, saying: "This is a severe, calamitous day!"—a day of trial, hardship, and overwhelming distress.
This verse highlights the immense moral burden carried by Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). He was a righteous man living among a people deeply immersed in corruption and sin. Yet, even in this moment of intense fear and anguish, his concern was not for himself but for the safety and honor of his guests. This is the character of the prophets—selfless, protective, and deeply compassionate.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the noble character of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). When faced with a terrifying situation, his first thought was to protect the innocent and uphold the sacred duty of hospitality—a value deeply cherished in Islam. The prophets were sent as role models for humanity, showing us how to remain steadfast, compassionate, and morally upright even in the most trying circumstances.
This story also reminds us of the grave danger of sexual immorality and how it corrupts individuals and societies. Islam calls us to purity, modesty, and the protection of family and honor. The punishment that later befell Lot's people serves as a timeless warning: no society that embraces such corruption can thrive in the sight of Allah.
Let us take a lesson from this: when we face difficulties, we should turn to Allah with patience and trust, just as the prophets did. And let us always strive to uphold the values of decency, kindness, and protection of the vulnerable—for these are the qualities that Allah loves and rewards. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and keep us far from every form of corruption. Ameen.
