Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • سُكِّرَتْ (sukkirat): Literally means "were blocked" or "were sealed." It implies that their eyesight was obstructed or dazzled, as if struck by a spell that prevented clear vision.
  • أَبْصَارُنَا (absāruna): Our eyesights or our visions.
  • مَّسْحُورُونَ (masḥūrūn): Bewitched or enchanted, meaning that their minds and perceptions were affected by magic.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah Almighty presents a powerful and striking scene to demonstrate the stubbornness and deep-rooted denial of the disbelievers of Mecca. Even if a door were opened for them in the heavens, and they were to ascend through it, witnessing with their own eyes the magnificent wonders of Allah’s dominion—the angels, the celestial realms, and the signs of His infinite power—they would still refuse to believe. Instead of acknowledging the truth, they would claim, "Our eyes have been dazzled and sealed; we cannot truly see what we think we see." They would go further and say, "Nay, we are a people bewitched," meaning that they would attribute what they witnessed to the magic of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), claiming that he had cast a spell over their senses and minds.

This verse exposes the profound sickness in their hearts and the extent of their obstinacy. No matter how clear the evidence or how great the miracle, their arrogance and prejudice would prevent them from submitting to the truth. Their denial was not based on lack of proof, but on a deliberate choice to reject guidance.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on the mercy of Allah, who has not left us without signs. He has sent down the Qur’an, a living miracle that challenges the intellect and touches the soul. He has opened the doors of faith to all who seek with sincerity. Unlike those who closed their eyes to the truth, we are invited to open our hearts, to see the signs of Allah in the universe and in His revelation. Do not let pride or habit blind you, for the truth is clear and the path to salvation is wide open. Embrace the light of Islam, and you will find peace that surpasses all understanding. Allah’s guidance is a treasure beyond measure—do not turn away from it, for the doors of His mercy are always open to those who seek Him with a pure heart.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Al-Hijr

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.
And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]
