Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Abwāb (أبواب): Gates or doors.
- Juz’ (جزء): A portion, share, or division.
- Maqsūm (مقسوم): Apportioned or allocated by divine decree.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of Hellfire, which was mentioned in the preceding verse as the promised destination for Iblis (Satan) and his followers. Allah informs us that this terrible Fire has seven gates, one below another, each gate leading to a different level of punishment. These gates are not equal in severity; rather, they are layered, with each lower gate being more intense in heat and torment than the one above it.
For each gate, there is a designated portion of Iblis’s followers who will enter through it. This division is not random or arbitrary—it is based on their deeds, intentions, and the degree of their misguidance. Those who committed greater sins and led others astray will enter the deeper, more severe levels, while those whose disobedience was lesser in degree will be assigned to the higher, less intense levels. Every single one of them has a predetermined place, and none will enter through a gate other than the one appointed for them.
This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah’s perfect justice. No one will be treated unfairly, and every soul will be placed precisely where its actions merit. The mention of "seven gates" also emphasizes the vastness and multiplicity of punishment, yet it simultaneously highlights that Allah’s mercy is even greater—for He has given humanity the choice, through His messengers and scriptures, to avoid these gates entirely and instead enter the gates of Paradise, which are eight in number, reflecting His abundant grace.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken your heart to the reality of accountability. The fact that Allah has detailed the gates of Hell shows us that He does not wish for anyone to enter them—He has sent the Qur’an, the Prophet ﷺ, and countless signs to guide us away from destruction. Every moment you breathe is an opportunity to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to strive for the gates of Jannah, which are open to all who believe and do righteous deeds. Do not let Shaytan deceive you into thinking you are beyond redemption, for Allah’s mercy encompasses all things. Choose the path of guidance today, and you will find that the gates of Paradise are far more beautiful and everlasting than anything this world can offer.
