Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Salāman (سَلَامًا): A greeting of peace and safety, meaning "Peace be upon you."
  • Wajilūn (وَجِلُونَ): Apprehensive, fearful, or filled with inner dread and anxiety.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse recounts a moment from the life of Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham, peace be upon him), when noble angels visited him in the form of human guests. They entered upon him and greeted him with the words "Salāman" — a pure and peaceful salutation. Ibrāhīm, may peace be upon him, responded to their greeting with an even better one, as is the noble character of a prophet. He then hastened to honor them as guests, bringing them a roasted calf to eat, assuming they were ordinary travelers in need of hospitality.

However, when he noticed that they did not extend their hands to eat, a deep unease settled in his heart. In the customs of his people, a guest who refused food was often a sign of ill intent or hostility. Thus, he expressed his inner state honestly and openly, saying: "Indeed, we are fearful of you." This was not a sign of cowardice, but of a wise and cautious heart, attuned to the signals around him and protective of his household.

A Reflective and Da‘wah-Oriented Message:

This beautiful scene teaches us profound lessons. First, it shows the noble character of Prophet Ibrāhīm — a man of generosity, hospitality, and keen perception. He did not hesitate to serve his guests, nor did he hide his feelings when something seemed amiss. His honesty and openness are qualities every believer should cherish.

Second, notice how the angels greeted him with peace — a greeting that carries the fragrance of mercy and safety. In Islam, spreading salām is a beloved act that fosters love and unity among people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged us to greet those we know and those we do not know, for it softens hearts and strengthens bonds.

Third, this verse reminds us that fear or caution in the face of the unknown is natural and human. What matters is how we respond — with wisdom, patience, and trust in Allah. Ibrāhīm’s fear was soon replaced by glad tidings, as the angels revealed their divine mission. So too, when trials or uncertainties come your way, hold firm to your faith, and Allah will replace your worry with relief and your fear with peace.

Let this story inspire you to be generous like Ibrāhīm, honest in your feelings, and ever reliant on Allah, who turns every hardship into a door of mercy. And remember: the greeting of peace is not just words — it is a prayer for safety that echoes in the heavens.
