Word Meanings:

  • الْقَانِطِينَ (al-qānitīn): Those who despair, lose hope, or give up expecting something good.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) expressed his astonishment at receiving the glad tidings of a son in his old age, the angels—who had come to him as guests—responded with reassurance and kindness. They said: "We have given you glad tidings with the truth"—meaning that what they conveyed was not a jest or a false hope, but a certain decree from Allah that must inevitably come to pass. They then gently advised him: "So do not be among those who despair."

This was a compassionate reminder to Ibrahim, despite his great station, that despair is not befitting of a believer—especially one who knows the power and mercy of Allah. The angels were not rebuking him harshly, but rather soothing his heart and strengthening his certainty. The message is clear: Allah's promise is true, His power knows no limits, and His mercy encompasses all things. Even when circumstances seem impossible by human measure, the believer must hold firm to hope in Allah's grace.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This beautiful scene teaches us a timeless lesson: no matter how difficult or hopeless a situation may appear, we must never lose faith in Allah's ability to change it. The same Allah who granted Ibrahim a son in his extreme old age is capable of granting you relief, provision, healing, or success from avenues you cannot even imagine. Despair is a whisper of Shaytan, while hope in Allah is an act of worship. So, dear reader, whenever life weighs heavily upon you, remember this divine exchange—the angels' words to Ibrahim are also a message for you: "We have brought you good news with the truth, so do not be among those who despair." Hold onto that hope, for with Allah, nothing is impossible.
