Word Meanings:

  • Yaqnat (يَقْنَطُ): Despairs, loses hope, or gives up expecting good.
  • Ad-Dalloon (الضَّالُّونَ): Those who have strayed from the path of truth and guidance; the misguided ones.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) responded to the angels' glad tidings of a son with a statement of profound faith and wisdom. He said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?" In this, Ibrahim teaches us a timeless lesson: despair of Allah's mercy is not a trait of the believers, but rather a hallmark of those who have lost their way and turned away from the straight path.

This was not a rejection of the news, but an expression of humble amazement—how could he and his wife, both advanced in age, have a child? Yet, he immediately corrected his own wonder by affirming that nothing is impossible for Allah, and that to doubt His mercy or power is a sign of misguidance. The verse also subtly rebukes any notion of hopelessness, reminding us that Allah’s mercy encompasses all things and that His ability surpasses all human limitations. Ibrahim’s words reflect a heart firmly anchored in trust in Allah, even when circumstances seem impossible.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beacon of hope for every believer. It teaches us that no matter how dire our situation appears—whether we face illness, poverty, childlessness, or any hardship—we must never lose hope in Allah’s mercy. Despair is a weapon of Shaytan, and it only afflicts those who have strayed from the path of faith. As Muslims, we are called to embody the spirit of Ibrahim: to receive every trial with patience, and to respond to every challenge with unwavering trust in Allah’s wisdom and grace. Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah in every moment of difficulty, for His mercy is vast, His power is limitless, and His love for His servants is greater than we can ever imagine. Never let hopelessness creep into your heart, for the One who created the heavens and the earth is fully capable of transforming your trials into blessings.
