Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anná (أنى): How, or from where — expressing astonishment and wonder.
  • Yakūnu lī ghulām (يكون لي غلام): Shall I have a son/boy child.
  • Yamsasnī bashar (يمسسني بشر): Has touched me any human being — meaning any man, whether through lawful marriage or otherwise.
  • Baghiyyan (بغيا): An unchaste woman, one who commits fornication or adultery.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Maryam (peace be upon her) responded to the angel’s glad tidings with pure astonishment, not out of doubt in Allah’s power, but out of wonder at the means by which this could occur. She said: "How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me — neither through lawful marriage nor through any unlawful approach — and I am not a woman of immorality who seeks illicit relationships?"

Her words reflect her complete purity and chastity, which she herself affirms. She knew that children are normally born through either lawful marriage or unlawful fornication, and neither applied to her. This was not a rejection of Allah’s decree, but rather a humble inquiry seeking to understand the manner of this miracle — a natural human reaction to something that defies the customary laws of nature.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse showcases the remarkable character of Maryam (peace be upon her) — a woman of such profound purity and devotion that Allah chose her above all women of the worlds. Her immediate response reveals a heart that was completely untainted by sin, and a soul that instinctively knew that such a blessing could only come from Allah’s omnipotence, not from natural causes.

Beloved reader, reflect on how Allah responded to her pure heart with a miracle that would become a sign for all humanity. When we purify ourselves — our hearts, our bodies, and our intentions — Allah opens doors we never imagined possible. Maryam’s story teaches us that when we sincerely submit to Allah and guard our chastity and honor, Allah honors us in ways that transcend the laws of nature. Her example is a beacon of hope for every believer: no matter how impossible a situation may seem, Allah’s power knows no limits. And her purity was rewarded with a son who would be one of the greatest prophets — Jesus (peace be upon him), a mercy to all worlds. So hold fast to your purity, guard your modesty, and trust in Allah — for He is Al-Qadir (The All-Powerful), and nothing is impossible for Him.
