Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَوَلَّىٰ (Tawallā): Turned away, withdrew, or departed.
- كَيْدَهُ (Kaydahu): His cunning, deception, or scheme — referring to his magicians and their craft.
- أَتَىٰ (Atā): Came — meaning he arrived at the appointed time and place.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Pharaoh heard the call of Musa (peace be upon him) to the truth — the message of monotheism and the command to free the Children of Israel — he did not respond with humility or reflection. Instead, he turned away in arrogance and rejection, refusing to even entertain the words of divine guidance. His heart was sealed with pride, and his mind was consumed with preserving his false authority.
But turning away was not enough for him. Pharaoh resolved to confront this "challenge" with all the force of deception and illusion at his disposal. So he gathered his كَيْد — his cunning, his stratagems, and his most skilled magicians — to counter the miracle of Musa with their own sorcery. He spared no effort in assembling the greatest display of false power, thinking that human trickery could stand against the command of Allah.
Then, ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ — he came to the appointed meeting, at the time and place set for the contest. He came with confidence, with his army of illusionists, and with the full weight of his worldly might. Yet, as the story unfolds, we know that all his scheming crumbled before the light of truth, for the power of Allah surpasses every plan and every deception.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when people turn away from the truth, they often resort to gathering their "كَيْد" — their schemes, resources, and alliances — to fight what they cannot comprehend. But no amount of worldly cunning can prevail against the will of Allah. As believers, we are reminded to place our trust in Allah alone, for He is the Best of Planners. When you stand for truth, even if the whole world gathers against you, remember that Allah's help is nearer than any scheme of man. Let this verse strengthen your heart: the victory of truth is not in the number of supporters or the strength of arguments, but in the sincerity of reliance upon the Almighty, who never abandons His righteous servants.
