Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- هَيْهَاتَ (Hayhāta): An Arabic expression denoting extreme distance and impossibility. It conveys the sense of "far-fetched" or "utterly remote."
- لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ (limā tūʿadūn): "For what you are promised" — referring to the promise of resurrection and being brought out of the graves alive after death.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah narrates the response of the disbelieving chiefs of Thamūd to the call of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) and his warning of the Day of Resurrection. They mocked the idea of life after death, saying: "Far-fetched, far-fetched is what you are promised!" They considered it utterly impossible that human beings, after dying and becoming dust and decayed bones, could ever be brought back to life and raised from their graves.
Their words reflect a deep-seated denial rooted in their limited understanding of Allah's infinite power. They judged the possibility of resurrection by their own human standards, forgetting that the One who created them from nothing is fully capable of recreating them after death. The repetition of "هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ" emphasizes their intense rejection and disbelief, as if they were trying to convince themselves and others of the impossibility of what the Prophet was telling them.
Yet, in this very denial lies a profound lesson for every believer: nothing is impossible for Allah. The same power that originated creation from a drop of fluid, that formed the heavens and the earth without any precedent, is more than able to restore life to decayed bones. The disbelievers' mockery only revealed their ignorance of Allah's majesty and their arrogance in the face of clear truth.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
O dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the greatness of Allah's power. When you see the dead earth come to life with vegetation after rain, when you witness the cycle of life and death in all creation, know that the One who does all this is certainly capable of raising you from your grave. Do not let the whispers of doubt or the mockery of the heedless distance you from the truth. The promise of Allah is true, and the meeting with Him is certain. Prepare for that day with sincere repentance, good deeds, and unwavering faith — for the resurrection is not a distant fantasy, but a reality closer to you than your own jugular vein. Embrace the truth before the truth embraces you on a day when no soul shall be wronged in the least, and every soul shall be repaid for what it used to do.
