Surah Al-Mu'minun — Verse 64

• مُتْرَفِيهِم (mutrafīhim): Their affluent ones, those who were given luxury and abundance in worldly life, and who became arrogant and heedless because of it.
• بِالْعَذَابِ (bil-ʿadhāb): With the punishment — referring to the severe affliction sent upon them.
• يَجْأَرُونَ (yaj'arūn): They cry out loudly, raising their voices in supplication, pleading for help, and begging for relief.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, describes the state of the arrogant wealthy disbelievers who rejected the truth and mocked the believers. They lived in comfort and luxury, indulging in their pleasures, and they thought their wealth and status would protect them from Allah's decree. But when the punishment of Allah seized them — whether it be the affliction of the Battle of Badr, as mentioned in the context of this chapter, or the torment of the Hereafter — they suddenly found themselves helpless, raising their voices in desperate cries, pleading for mercy and deliverance.

At that moment, all their pride and arrogance vanished. The very people who once turned away from the truth with disdain, who mocked the messengers and their followers, were now humbled, crying out in anguish and seeking relief from the very One they had ignored. Yet, their cries came too late — after the decree had already been fulfilled, and after the opportunity for repentance had passed.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that no amount of wealth, power, or worldly comfort can shield a person from the command of Allah. When His punishment arrives, the mighty become weak, the rich become poor, and the arrogant become humiliated. The One who was forgotten in times of ease becomes the only One called upon in times of hardship — but for those who persisted in denial, their call will not be answered.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. How many of us are deceived by the luxuries of this world? How many of us feel secure in our wealth, our health, and our youth, forgetting that every breath we take is by the permission of Allah? Do not wait until calamity strikes to remember your Lord. Turn to Him now, in times of ease, with gratitude and obedience. Let your heart be soft and your tongue moist with His remembrance — so that when you call upon Him, He answers, and when you seek His mercy, He grants it. For the doors of repentance are open, but they will not remain open forever. Seize this moment, for tomorrow may be too late.
