Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yā Waylanā (يَا وَيْلَنَا): An expression of extreme distress and regret, meaning "Woe to us!" or "Alas for us!" — a cry of utter ruin and destruction.
- Yawm al-Dīn (يَوْمُ الدِّينِ): The Day of Recompense and Judgment — the day when Allah will call His servants to account for all their deeds, both good and evil.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On that terrifying Day of Resurrection, when the truth of what they once denied becomes undeniably clear, the disbelievers and those who rejected the message of their prophets will cry out in utter despair: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense!"
This is the moment when every soul is confronted with the reality of its deeds. The very people who used to mock the idea of resurrection and say, "When will this Day come?" will now see it with their own eyes — the scales of justice set up, the records of deeds laid open, and every action from their worldly life brought forth for judgment. Their cry is not merely an expression of fear, but a painful admission of their own loss. They realize, too late, that this is the Day they were warned about — the Day when no excuse will avail, no intercession without Allah's permission will help, and every soul will be repaid in full for what it earned.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every human being: the Day of Judgment is not a myth or a distant tale — it is an absolute certainty. The same people who lived their lives as if they would never be brought back to life will, on that Day, acknowledge with their own tongues that this is indeed the Day of Recompense. Their acknowledgment, however, will come at a time when it will be of no benefit to them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart before that Day arrives. The Qur'an is not merely informing us of what the disbelievers will say — it is inviting us to be among those who prepare for this Day while they still have time. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that the wise person is the one who holds themselves accountable and works for what comes after death.
Today, you have the precious opportunity to turn to your Lord, to mend your relationship with Him, and to fill your scales with good deeds. The door of repentance is wide open, and Allah's mercy is greater than all your sins. Do not wait until you are among those who cry out in regret — rather, be among those who will rejoice on that Day, when they are told: "Enter Paradise, for you have earned it by your righteous deeds."
This life is the only chance you have to invest in your eternal future. Seize it, and let the remembrance of that Day be a driving force that moves you toward goodness, patience, and sincere devotion to Allah — the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
