Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fa-aghwaynākum – "So we led you astray" – meaning we called you to misguidance and misled you from the path of truth.
  • Ghāwīn – "Those who went astray" – meaning we were ourselves lost and deviating from the right path before calling you to it.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the dialogue that will take place between the leaders of disbelief and their followers in the Hellfire. On that Day, the followers will turn to their leaders and blame them for their miserable end, saying, "It was you who led us away from the truth and prevented us from following the messengers." In response, the leaders will say: "So we led you astray, for indeed we were ourselves astray."

This is a frank admission from the leaders of misguidance — they acknowledge that they called their followers to disbelief and sin, not because they were certain of its truth, but because they themselves were lost and had deviated from the path of guidance. They were blind guides leading the blind, and now they all share the same painful fate. Their confession, however, will not save them; it only confirms their guilt and the justice of their punishment.

This verse carries a profound lesson: those who call others to evil bear a double burden — the weight of their own sin and the weight of the sins of those who followed them, without diminishing the followers' responsibility. It also serves as a stark warning to every person to be careful about whom they take as leaders and role models, and to always measure words and actions against the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this scene with a heart that fears Allah. The leaders of misguidance did not force anyone to follow them — they merely invited, and people responded. Today, you are invited by many voices: voices of doubt, voices of desire, voices that call away from the straight path. But you have the intellect and the choice. Do not let anyone drag you into a fire whose heat you cannot bear. Cling to the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, for they are the rope of Allah that will never break. And remember that on the Day when every soul will stand alone before its Lord, no leader will be able to intercede for you or share your burden. Choose your path wisely, for this life is the only chance to secure an eternal success. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from being among those who lead others astray or follow those who do.
