Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Naba' (نَبَأَ): News, story, or tidings of great significance.
  • Qurban (قُرْبَانًا): An offering or sacrifice presented to draw near to Allah.
  • Tuqubbila (فَتُقُبِّلَ): It was accepted (by Allah).
  • Muttaqin (الْمُتَّقِينَ): Those who are God-conscious, righteous, and fearful of Allah in their hearts and actions.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, recite and convey to them—especially to those who harbor envy and resentment—the true story of Adam's two sons, Qabil (Cain) and Habil (Abel). This is not a myth or a fable; it is the absolute truth, revealed to you by your Lord. When each of them presented an offering to Allah—seeking His pleasure and nearness—the offering of Habil was accepted because his heart was pure, his intention sincere, and his life reflected taqwa (God-consciousness). But the offering of Qabil was not accepted, for his heart was tainted with arrogance and his deeds lacked sincerity.

Instead of turning inward, repenting, and correcting his state, Qabil was consumed by envy and rage. He threatened his brother, saying, "I will surely kill you!" But Habil, the righteous brother, responded with the most beautiful and profound wisdom: "Allah only accepts from the righteous." He did not retaliate with threats or insults; he simply reminded his brother of the divine truth—that acceptance of deeds is not based on status, wealth, or lineage, but on genuine piety and obedience to Allah.

This story carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. Envy (hasad) is a destructive disease that has plagued mankind since the very beginning. It was envy that led to the first murder on earth, and it is envy that continues to tear families and communities apart. Yet, the response of Habil teaches us the noble character of a believer: patience, gentleness, and reliance on Allah's wisdom. He understood that Allah's acceptance is not something to be earned through rivalry, but through sincere devotion and righteous living.

So, dear reader, reflect on this: Are you like Habil, whose focus is on pleasing Allah and purifying your heart? Or are you like Qabil, allowing envy and pride to consume you? The choice is yours. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has shown us the path of the righteous—so follow it, and you will find peace in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 25-29 — Al-Maidah

[Moses] said, "My Lord, indeed I do not possess except myself and my brother, so part us from the defiantly disobedient people."
[Allah] said, "Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years [in which] they will wander throughout the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people."
And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].
If you should raise your hand against me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."
