Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Nuhyee (نُحْيِي): We give life — bringing creation into existence and sustaining life.
- Numitu (نُمِيتُ): We cause death — taking life away at the appointed time.
- Al-Maseer (الْمَصِير): The final destination, the ultimate return and end.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound and powerful verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares His absolute and exclusive sovereignty over life and death. He says: "Indeed, it is We Who give life and cause death, and to Us is the final return."
This means that Allah alone is the Creator and Sustainer of all existence. He is the One Who brings every living being into existence from nothing, and He is the One Who takes life away when His appointed decree arrives. No one else shares this power — no human, no prophet, no angel, no force of nature. Life and death are entirely in His Hands, and He does with His creation as He wills.
And after this life — with all its trials, joys, and sorrows — every single soul will return to Him. There is no escape from this return, and no other destination awaits us. The journey of this world is temporary; the true and everlasting abode is with Allah. He will gather all of humanity on the Day of Resurrection, and He will judge them with perfect justice. Every deed, whether great or small, will be accounted for, and every person will be recompensed according to what they earned.
This verse also carries a beautiful and comforting message for the believer. Since Allah alone gives life and causes death, and since our ultimate return is to Him, then we should not fear death or the trials of this world. Death is not an end — it is a transition to a meeting with our Lord. The believer who lives a life of obedience and righteousness looks forward to this meeting with hope and serenity, knowing that Allah is the Most Merciful and the Most Just.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. You did not create yourself, and you cannot prevent your own death. Your life is a gift from Allah, and your death is a certainty. The question is: where are you heading? What have you prepared for your return to your Lord?
This is the moment to turn back to Allah, to worship Him alone, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life that pleases Him. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Do not let the distractions of this world deceive you, for this life is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternity that awaits you. Return to your Lord before you return to Him — for indeed, to Him is the final destination, and He is the Best of Judges.
