📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Falawlā (فَلَوْلَا): "Why not" or "If only" — used here as a word of rebuke and challenge, prompting reflection.
  • Balaghat (بَلَغَتْ): "It reached" — referring to the soul (ar-rūḥ) as it departs the body.
  • Al-Ḥulqūm (الْحُلْقُوم): The throat or windpipe — the final passage the soul traverses at the moment of death.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, poses a profound and challenging question to humanity: "Why is it that when the soul reaches the throat at the moment of death—when a person is in their final breaths, struggling to cling to life—you are powerless to do anything?" At that critical instant, you stand around the dying person, watching helplessly as their life slips away. You cannot delay it, you cannot bring it back, and you cannot prevent what is unfolding before your very eyes.

This verse strips away all illusions of human power and control. It confronts us with the undeniable reality that death is an absolute certainty, and that no amount of wealth, status, or medical intervention can hold back the soul once its appointed time has come. The One who gave life is the only One who takes it away, and His decree is final and inescapable.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect deeply upon this moment. If you cannot even control the breath in your own chest or the soul of a loved one at the final hour, then how can you claim independence from your Creator? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that your life is a trust from Allah, and your time in this world is limited. It calls you to prepare for that inevitable meeting with your Lord—through sincere repentance, righteous deeds, and a heart attached to Him.

Do not let this life deceive you with its fleeting pleasures. The moment when the soul reaches the throat is closer than you think, and no one knows when it will come. Turn to Allah now, while you still have the chance, and make every moment count. Seek His mercy, His forgiveness, and His guidance, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, and He accepts the repentance of those who turn to Him sincerely. Let this verse awaken your heart and draw you closer to the path of eternal success.

And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?

And you are at that time looking on -
