Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kataba 'ala nafsihi ar-rahmah: He has prescribed and made incumbent upon Himself mercy.
- La yajma'anna-kum: He will surely gather you (on the Day of Resurrection).
- Khasirū anfusahum: Those who have lost themselves — i.e., brought ruin and destruction upon their own souls through disbelief and sin.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to these polytheists who deny the Oneness of Allah and the truth of your message: "To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?" If they remain silent, their silence itself is an admission. Then say: "To Allah belongs all of it." For they themselves know and acknowledge that the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all existence is Allah alone. So why do they worship others besides Him?
Then comes a profound and heart-touching declaration: Allah has written mercy upon Himself. This means that His mercy is not a mere possibility — it is an established, guaranteed attribute that He has obligated upon His own noble Self. He does not hasten to punish His servants for their sins and transgressions; rather, He gives them time, opens the door of repentance, and waits for them to return to Him. This is a call of love and hope — a reminder that the Lord who owns everything is also the Most Merciful, and His mercy precedes His wrath.
Yet, despite this immense mercy, Allah has also decreed that He will surely gather all of humanity on the Day of Resurrection — a day about which there is no doubt whatsoever. On that day, every soul will be held accountable for what it has done. The gathering is certain, the judgment is certain, and the recompense is certain. This is not a threat from a tyrant, but a promise from the Most Just and Most Merciful, who wants His servants to know that this worldly life is not the end — there is a greater purpose and a final destination.
As for those who have lost themselves — they are the ones who chose disbelief over faith, who traded eternal bliss for fleeting worldly pleasures, who rejected the truth when it came to them clearly. They have wronged their own souls, and because of their persistent rejection and arrogance, they do not believe. Their loss is complete, and their ruin is self-inflicted.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful verse. The One who owns the heavens and the earth — every star, every galaxy, every mountain, every ocean — has written mercy upon Himself. He is not a distant, indifferent Creator; He is a Lord who loves, who forgives, who opens His doors to those who call upon Him. If you have sinned, if you have strayed, if you have neglected your duties — know that His mercy is greater than your sins. But do not let His mercy make you complacent, for the Day of Gathering is real and certain. Let this verse be a turning point in your life: return to your Lord before that day comes, and be among those who believe, not among those who have lost themselves. The door of repentance is open — do not wait until it closes.
