Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the powerful argument against the worship of idols, addressing the polytheists directly and exposing the utter helplessness of the false gods they have chosen. Allah says: "And if you call them to guidance, they do not hear." This means that even if the idolaters were to call upon their idols—whether for guidance, help, or intercession—the idols are completely deaf to their calls. They possess no ears to hear, no minds to comprehend, and no ability to respond. This is a stark rebuke, highlighting the futility of placing one's hopes in lifeless objects.
Then Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, saying: "And you see them looking at you, but they do not see." The idols, which were often carved in the shape of humans or animals with eyes, hands, and feet, appear to the onlooker as though they are staring back at you. Yet, these are mere forms and shapes—solid, motionless, and lifeless. Their eyes are hollow or painted, incapable of perceiving anything. They do not truly see, nor do they understand, nor can they ever respond to anyone who calls upon them.
This verse is a profound lesson in *tawheed* (the oneness of Allah). It strips away any illusion of power or divinity from the idols, showing them for what they truly are: creations of human hands, devoid of life, hearing, or sight. How then could anyone worship them? How could anyone expect benefit or harm from them? The contrast is clear: Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the Ever-Living who responds to His servants, while these idols are deaf, blind, and dead.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this scene. The idols that people once worshipped—and still worship today in various forms—are nothing but stone, wood, or metal. They cannot hear a single word of your supplication, nor can they see your tears of desperation. Yet, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One who hears the silent whisper of every heart and sees the faintest movement of every leaf, invites you to call upon Him. He says in another verse: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir 40:60).
This is the beauty of Islam: it frees you from the chains of worshipping lifeless objects and directs your heart to the Living, Eternal God who never fails those who turn to Him. When you raise your hands in supplication, He hears you. When you cry out in distress, He sees your state and responds with wisdom, mercy, and love. So, leave behind every false object of worship, and embrace the One who truly hears, truly sees, and truly cares for you. This is the path of guidance, the path of peace, and the path to eternal success.
