Word Meanings:
- "And do not cause corruption" (wa lā tufsidū): Do not spread mischief, injustice, or wrongdoing.
- "After its reformation" (baʿda iṣlāḥihā): After Allah has set the earth in order through justice, the sending of messengers, and the establishment of divine laws.
- "In fear and hope" (khawfan wa ṭamaʿan): Calling upon Allah with a heart that fears His punishment and hopes for His mercy and reward.
- "The doers of good" (al-muḥsinīn): Those who worship Allah as though they see Him, who perfect their deeds and intentions, and who excel in their obedience to Him.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, commands His servants to refrain from spreading corruption on earth after He has already set it in order. This reformation came through the sending of prophets and messengers, who established justice, taught divine laws, and guided humanity to worship Allah alone. Corruption here includes all forms of sin, oppression, polytheism, and transgression against Allah’s commands—whether in word, deed, or belief.
After prohibiting corruption, Allah commands us to call upon Him alone—sincerely, with humility, and with a heart that balances between fear of His punishment and hope for His mercy and reward. This is the essence of true worship: a believer does not despair of Allah’s mercy, nor does he feel completely secure from His justice. Rather, he stands between hope and fear, turning to his Lord in every matter.
Then Allah concludes with a beautiful promise: His mercy is near to those who excel in goodness (al-muḥsinīn). This means that those who perfect their faith and actions—who are sincere in their worship, kind to His creation, and steadfast in obedience—are the closest to Allah’s mercy. His mercy encompasses them, protects them, and guides them in this life and the next.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder that our role on this earth is not to destroy, but to build; not to spread harm, but to be a source of goodness and reform. When you see corruption around you—in society, in your own heart, or in your dealings with others—remember that Allah has already laid the foundation of justice and mercy. Your duty is to build upon it, not to tear it down.
And when you supplicate to Allah, do so with a heart that is alive—fearing His displeasure, yet hopeful of His boundless mercy. This balance keeps you humble, grateful, and persistent in prayer. Know that Allah’s mercy is not distant or unreachable; it is near, especially to those who strive to be among the doers of good. So be one of them, and you will find His mercy embracing you in ways you never imagined. Let this verse inspire you to be a reformer on earth, a caller to goodness, and a servant who never stops knocking on the door of His Lord’s mercy.
