Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "ضَرًّا" (darran): Harm, evil, or any form of affliction or misfortune.
- "رَشَدًا" (rashadan): Right guidance, benefit, or the capacity to lead someone to goodness and success.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Say, O Messenger, to those who demand that you bring them harm or benefit at your own will: "Indeed, I do not possess the power to cause you any harm, nor am I able to bring you any guidance or benefit on my own accord." This is a profound declaration of the Prophet's ﷺ complete dependence on Allah and his absolute honesty in conveying his role. He is not a deity, nor a partner with Allah in managing creation; rather, he is a servant and a messenger. The power to harm, benefit, guide, or misguide rests solely with Allah, the Almighty, who does whatever He wills. The Prophet ﷺ is but a warner and a bearer of glad tidings, entrusted with delivering the divine message. He cannot avert a calamity that Allah has decreed, nor can he bestow a blessing that Allah has withheld.
Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ is commanded to declare that he himself is not immune to Allah's punishment if he disobeys Him, and that he has no refuge or shelter from Allah's wrath except in Him. His only power is to convey the message of Allah and to call people to His path. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will attain success and Paradise, while whoever disobeys and turns away will face the fire of Hell, remaining therein forever, with no escape.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful lesson in humility and sincerity. It teaches us that all affairs are in the Hands of Allah alone, and that no human being—no matter how noble or exalted—can bring benefit or harm except by Allah's will. The Prophet ﷺ, the most beloved of creation to Allah, openly declares his own powerlessness, directing all hearts to the One who truly possesses all power. This is an invitation for us to place our trust in Allah, to turn to Him in all matters, and to recognize that our ultimate success lies in following the guidance He has sent through His Messenger. It also reminds us of the Prophet's ﷺ honesty and mercy—he never claimed what was not his right, and he never promised what he could not deliver. His only concern was to guide humanity to the truth. Let this verse inspire you to rely on Allah, to love His Messenger ﷺ for his sincerity, and to strive in the path of obedience, knowing that true benefit is in following the divine guidance, and true harm is in turning away from it.
