Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mafar (الْمَفَر): The place of escape, refuge, or flight; a shelter to flee to for safety.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day—the Day of Resurrection—when the horrors unfold and the sky splits, when the stars are extinguished and the mountains are scattered like dust, the disbelieving human being will cry out in utter desperation: "Where is the escape? Where can I flee to?" This is the frantic question of a soul that has realized, too late, that there is no refuge from the justice of Allah. The sinner who spent his life running from the truth, evading accountability, and indulging in heedlessness will suddenly find that there is nowhere left to run. Every path is blocked, every door is closed, and every hiding place is exposed before the All-Seeing Lord.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the terror and regret that will seize the guilty on that Day. The human being who once arrogantly denied the resurrection will now seek any possible escape—but to no avail. The Qur'an responds to this desperate question in the following verses: "No! There is no refuge! Unto your Lord that Day is the final abode." (75:11-12) This means that the only true destination is Allah Himself—whether to His mercy or His punishment.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a description of a future event; it is a profound reminder for us today. We have the precious opportunity, right now, to "flee" to Allah—not from Him, but to Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from You" (i.e., from Your punishment to Your mercy). The doors of repentance are wide open in this life. We can escape the terror of that Day by turning to Allah in sincerity, by performing our prayers, by giving charity, and by following the guidance of His final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. Do not wait until the Day when the question "Where is the escape?" will be met with silence and despair. Run to Allah today, and He will grant you a safe haven in His eternal Paradise—a place where there is no fear, no sorrow, and no end to bliss. This is the ultimate success, and it is within your reach, right now, with a single sincere step toward your Creator.
