Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Uhiya" (was revealed/inspired): Allah's divine communication sent to Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) through revelation.
- "Lan yu'min" (will not believe): A definitive statement of certainty that no one else would come to faith.
- "Fala tabta'is" (do not grieve/do not be distressed): A command to refrain from sorrow or anguish.
- "Bima kanu yaf'alun" (at what they were doing): Referring to their persistent rejection, mockery, and harmful actions against the Prophet and his followers.
The Interpretation:
In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) reveals to His noble Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) a decisive and final truth: after centuries of patient preaching, only those who had already believed would ever embrace faith. The door of guidance for the rest of his people had been closed by their own stubbornness and rejection. This was not a punishment inflicted upon them arbitrarily, but the natural consequence of their continuous defiance and refusal to heed the truth despite every clear sign and warning.
Allah then consoles His beloved Prophet with the words: "So do not grieve over what they used to do." This is a divine comfort that carries profound wisdom—Nuh (peace be upon him) had done his duty perfectly, delivered the message with unwavering dedication, and endured their mockery and harm for nine hundred and fifty years. His heart ached for their salvation, but Allah was telling him: *You have fulfilled your mission; their fate is now in My hands.* The sorrow he felt was natural for a compassionate prophet, but Allah lifted this burden from him by assuring him that justice would prevail and that their punishment was decreed.
This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: as believers and callers to the truth, we are responsible for conveying the message with sincerity and wisdom, but we are not responsible for the outcomes. Guidance is entirely in Allah's hands. When we see people reject the truth despite our best efforts, we should not let grief overwhelm us, nor should we despair—rather, we should trust in Allah's perfect plan and remain steadfast in our mission.
The verse also marks a turning point in the story of Nuh (peace be upon him). After this revelation, he made his famous supplication against the disbelievers, saying: *"My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers a single inhabitant"* (Nuh 71:26). This was not out of personal vengeance, but because Allah had already decreed their destruction, and Nuh's prayer was in harmony with divine will.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how Allah cares for His prophets and righteous servants! He does not leave them in confusion or prolonged grief—He guides them, comforts them, and reassures them that their efforts are never wasted. Every sincere deed you do for the sake of Allah is recorded, and even if you do not see the results in this world, your reward is with Allah in the Hereafter.
Let this verse inspire you to persevere in doing good, to be patient in the face of rejection, and to place your complete trust in Allah. Never let the negativity of others extinguish the light of hope in your heart. Remember: your duty is to plant the seeds of goodness; Allah alone causes them to grow and bear fruit. And what a beautiful promise He gives to those who remain steadfast: *"Indeed, the party of Allah will be the successful"* (Al-Mujadila 58:22).
