Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Qamees (قميص): The shirt or garment worn by Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him.
  • Qudda (قُدَّ): Torn or ripped from its fabric.
  • Dubur (دُبُر): The back part of the garment, i.e., from behind.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the testimony of the witness from the household of the Aziz (the chief minister of Egypt), who presented the decisive evidence to resolve the dispute between the wife of the Aziz and Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him. The witness declared: If the shirt is torn from the front, then Yusuf is the one who attempted to seduce her, and she is telling the truth. But if the shirt is torn from the back, then she pursued him while he fled from her, which proves his innocence and her false accusation.

Here, Allah states the second condition: "And if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful." The logic is clear and compelling: when Yusuf fled from her advances, she ran after him to stop him, grabbing his shirt from behind, which caused it to tear at the back. This physical evidence aligns perfectly with his account of events—he was the one escaping sin, not pursuing it. Thus, the tear at the back becomes an undeniable sign of his truthfulness and her guilt.

This verse highlights the wisdom of Allah in providing a simple, tangible proof to uncover the truth. It also teaches us a profound lesson: Allah never abandons His righteous servants. When Yusuf chose to flee from sin for the sake of Allah, Allah protected his honor and exposed the falsehood of his accuser. The torn shirt, which could have been a source of shame, became the very evidence of his purity.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder how Allah turned a moment of trial into a testimony of truth. Yusuf, peace be upon him, was alone, far from his family, and faced with a powerful woman's false accusation—yet Allah's justice prevailed. This is a reminder that no matter how difficult your circumstances may seem, if you remain steadfast in righteousness and trust in Allah, He will defend you and make your truth known. The Qur'an is filled with such stories to strengthen our faith and guide us through life's challenges. Let this verse inspire you to always choose the path of integrity, even when it seems harder, for Allah is with those who are patient and truthful. And know that the ultimate victory belongs to the believers, just as it did for Yusuf, peace be upon him.

📜 Verse 25-29 — Yusuf

And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified. "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."
So when her husband saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great.
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
