Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿIẓāman (عِظَامًا): Bones.
  • Rufātan (رُفَاتًا): Decayed, crumbled remains; dust-like fragments of bones and bodies that have disintegrated over time.
  • Lamabʿūthūn (لَمَبْعُوثُونَ): Surely raised up (resurrected).
  • Khalqan jadīdan (خَلْقًا جَدِيدًا): A new creation; a fresh, renewed form of existence.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance and denial of the Hereafter, said in astonishment and mockery: "What! When we have died and become mere bones reduced to dust and decayed fragments—shall we really be raised up again as a new creation?" They deemed this utterly impossible, arguing that once a body has decomposed and mingled with the earth, there is no way it could ever be restored to life. Their words reflected a deep ignorance of Allah’s infinite power, for they measured His ability by their own limited human understanding. They failed to realize that the One who originated creation from nothing in the first place is perfectly capable of bringing it back to life anew—indeed, recreating it is even easier for Him than the first act of creation.

Reflection and Daʿwah:

This verse highlights a timeless human weakness: the tendency to judge divine power by human standards. The disbelievers thought that because they could not imagine resurrection, it could never happen. Yet, look at the world around you—every spring, the earth that seemed dead and barren bursts forth with vibrant life. The One who causes a dry seed to split open and grow into a towering tree, and who revives the lifeless soil after rain, is the very same Lord who will resurrect you from your graves. Your bodies may decay, but your souls are immortal, and your deeds are preserved. Do not let the whispers of doubt rob you of the hope and accountability that resurrection brings. The Quran calls you to a profound truth: this worldly life is not the end. It is a brief journey, a test, and a planting ground for the eternal harvest. So, prepare for that Day when you will stand before your Creator—not as bones and dust, but as a living soul, accountable for every breath and every choice. Embrace this truth now, and let it transform your heart into one that seeks Allah’s pleasure, for the resurrection is not a distant impossibility—it is the certain reality that gives meaning to your existence.
