Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jī'tum (جِئْتُمْ): You have brought forth or uttered.
- Shay'an (شَيْئًا): A matter, statement, or affair.
- Iddan (إِدًّا): Something monstrous, terrible, and abhorrent — an enormity that is utterly detestable and beyond the bounds of decency.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a direct and severe rebuke directed at those who made the shocking claim that Allah, the Most Merciful, has taken a son — a statement that the previous verses condemned with the strongest words. Here, Allah addresses them with piercing clarity: "You have indeed brought forth something monstrous!"
The word *idd* in Arabic denotes something so hideous and grievous that it makes the heavens tremble, the earth split asunder, and the mountains crumble in horror — as the following verses will vividly describe. It is not merely a mistake or a minor misstep; it is a colossal transgression against the very essence of Allah's oneness and majesty. The claim of a son for Allah implies a partner in His divinity, a need or deficiency in His perfection, and a likeness to His creation — all of which are utterly incompatible with His absolute uniqueness, self-sufficiency, and eternal nature.
This statement was not just a personal error; it was a public declaration that struck at the foundation of faith itself. By using the plural "you," the verse makes clear that all who propagate, accept, or defend such a belief share in the gravity of this offense. It is a warning that words about Allah carry immense weight — and that speaking about Him without knowledge is a sin of the highest order.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful and pure is the Quran's message about Allah! It protects our hearts from falling into the darkness of false beliefs and elevates our understanding of our Creator to the highest level of reverence and love. When we say "Allahu Ahad" (Allah is One), we are not just uttering a phrase — we are affirming the very foundation of the universe, the source of all peace, and the key to eternal salvation. This verse calls us to guard our tongues and our hearts, to learn about Allah through His revealed words and His beautiful names, and to never attribute to Him anything that diminishes His glory. Let this be a reminder for us to approach the Quran with humility, to seek knowledge sincerely, and to cherish the pure monotheism that every prophet — from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — came to establish. For in that oneness lies our true liberation, our inner peace, and our hope for a meeting with our Lord in the gardens of eternal bliss.
