Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sübhanahu (سُبْحَانَهُ): Glory be to Him; declaring Him far above and free from any imperfection or deficiency.
- Qānitūn (قَانِتُونَ): Obedient, submissive, and humbly devoted to Him.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse addresses a grave falsehood that was uttered by various groups: the Jews claimed that Ezra (Uzayr) was the son of God, the Christians claimed that the Messiah (Jesus, peace be upon him) was the son of God, and the Arab polytheists claimed that the angels were daughters of God. They all said, "Allah has taken a son."
Allah, the Exalted, declares Himself utterly free from such a claim. Glory be to Him — He is far above needing a child, for having a son implies need, companionship, and physical succession, all of which are impossible for the Creator and Sustainer of all existence. He is Al-Ghaniyy (The Self-Sufficient), who stands in need of nothing, while everything stands in need of Him.
The verse then establishes the truth: "Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth." Everything — every angel, every human, every creature — is His property and His servant. There is no partner, no equal, and no offspring. And then comes the beautiful affirmation: "All are obedient to Him" (kullun lahu qānitūn). This means all creation is submissive to His will — either willingly, as in the case of the believers, or by force, as in the case of the disbelievers and all other creatures who are under His absolute control and decree.
This verse is a powerful reminder of the absolute oneness and majesty of Allah. It corrects the distorted beliefs of those who attribute to Him what does not befit His glory. As Muslims, we are called to embrace this pure monotheism (Tawhid) with love and humility, recognizing that our greatest honor is not to be called "sons of God," but to be His devoted and obedient servants. Indeed, the highest rank any creation can attain is to be a faithful servant of Allah, and this is the path to true success and eternal bliss. Let us rejoice in this noble station and strive to live in complete submission to our Lord, who is far above any imperfection, and who alone deserves all praise and worship.
