Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Tantahi" (تنتَهي): To desist, cease, or stop from something.
- "Al-Mukhrajīn" (المُخْرَجِين): Those who are expelled, driven out, or banished from a place.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, we witness the height of arrogance and defiance from the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). When Lot continued to advise his people and forbid them from their abominable acts—acts that violated the natural order of creation and the commandments of Allah—they responded not with reflection or repentance, but with threats and intimidation.
They said to him: "O Lot, if you do not stop your admonition and your disapproval of our behavior, you will surely be among those expelled from our land." They made it clear that they would rather banish the one who called them to righteousness than abandon their wickedness. This was their final warning—a threat to remove him from their city entirely if he persisted in his mission.
This response reveals the deep-seated corruption of their hearts. Instead of listening to the truth, they sought to silence it. Instead of reforming their ways, they chose to rid themselves of the one who reminded them of Allah. Their arrogance blinded them to the mercy of Allah, and their attachment to sin made them reject the very guidance that could have saved them.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This story carries a profound lesson for all of us. How often do we, when confronted with truth, respond with discomfort or even hostility? How often do we prefer to silence the voice of righteousness rather than change our ways? The people of Lot chose expulsion for their prophet, but in doing so, they expelled themselves from the mercy of Allah.
Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to be among those who welcome the truth, no matter how difficult it may be to accept. Let your heart be soft and receptive to guidance, for the one who listens to wisdom and acts upon it is truly successful. And remember, the threats of the world are temporary, but the pleasure of Allah is eternal. Even if you are expelled from your community for the sake of truth, Allah will grant you a better place—just as He granted Prophet Lot safety and honor after his trials.
Be steadfast in what is right, and trust that Allah is with those who are patient and sincere. The path of righteousness may be lonely at times, but its destination is the ultimate success—both in this life and the Hereafter.
